The Properties of Polyurethane

Novathane Polyurethane is a cast elastomer which has the versatility to be molded in a wide range of techniques and properties.

THIS ALLOWS FOR IMPROVED PRODUCT PERFORMANCES IN A WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS.

For applications of polyurethane that involve water the parts can be cast using polyether-based resins. However, polyester-based resins are more practical for resisting damage from strong abrasions, like cuts and tears.

HARD AS BONE OR SOFT AS RUBBER

A product created with Novathane Polyurethane has a unique advantage. The polyurethane elastomers can be altered for a hardness level ranging from 10-15 Shore A (durometer). This can be compared to the softness of a gum eraser. This level can also be changed to over 80 Shore D (durometer), exceeding the hardness of a golf ball.

Novathane Polyurethane can be altered to a variety of hardness levels - even more than conventional rubbers.

RESISTANT TO ABRASION

In many applications of polyurethane elastomers, good resistance to abrasion, and low coefficient of friction are essential characteristics.

The lowest coefficients of frictions are achieved with high hardness formulations. Additives can also increase the COF to achieve a comparable UHMW solution adding toughness to your application.

In comparison to rubber, plastics, and even some metals, Novathane Polyurethane elastomers have a definite wear advantage.

HIGHLY RESISTANT TO IMPACT

Conventional plastic materials can become brittle and weak over time. Unlike plastic, polyurethanes remains elastic and resist fracture. This amount of toughness makes polyurethanes ideal for parts that have to hold against high impact or repeated impingement.

WIDE RESILIENCE RANGE

Unlike rubbers, high hardness polyurethanes can be just as resilient as softer materials. In shock absorbing applications, low rebound compounds are usually used in the range of 10-40%. In high frequency vibrations or where quick recovery is needed, compounds of 40-65% resilience are used.

In general, toughness is enhanced by resilience.

FLEXIBLE AT WIDE RANGE TEMPERATURES

Polyurethanes can be used in all sorts of temperatures. When exposed to freezing temperatures they remain quite flexible, are resistant to thermal shock, and can withstand sudden temperature drops without cracking.

If higher operational temperatures are required. Novathane Polyurethane can go under continuous use at 90C (194F) OR special high temperature formulations can be used up to 350F.

ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES

Novathane potting polyurethanes are excellent insulators. They are used extensively in potting and encapsulating applications, as well as other areas where electrical isolation is vital.

WIDE RESISTANCE TO OIL, GREASE, AND CHEMICALS - Novathane Polyurethanes resist a broad range of liquids.

FLAME RESISTANT

Products made from polyurethane can be formulated with additives for flame resistance.

MOLD, MILDEW, AND FUNGUS RESISTANT

Novathane Polyurethane elastomers do not support fungus growth.

HIGH AND LOW FRICTION FORMULATIONS

Polyurethanes resemble most plastics when dealing with friction. Friction against non-lubricated surfaces generally decreases with harder formulations, which holds true for polyurethanes. However, they can be formulated with very low coefficients or friction for products like bushings, bearings, and wear strips. If needed, additives can be used to further reduce friction.

Softer polyurethane formulations are used when more friction is needed. For example, consider solid industrial tires, feed rollers, and drive rollers - special designs can be used in the casting process to improve traction.

NOISE REDUCTION

Special formulations are available for sound-deadening and anti-vibration applications. These generally have low resilience.

OZONE RESISTANCE

Products made from Novathane Polyurethane are highly resistant of deteriorating from atmospheric oxygen and ozone exposure. Our experience with outdoor applications will give your products the best life expectancy without cracking or hardening compared to conventional elastomers and many plastics.

RADIATION RESISTANCE 

Polyurethane elastomers are considered to have better gamma ray radiation than conventional elastomers. Polyurethane retains a high degree of their original flexibility and toughness when exposed. A review of the application is required.

LOW MOLD AND TOOLING COSTS

Molding and creating polyurethane products is a low-pressure liquid casting process. It has the ability to produce very large parts in limited quantities economically.
